Use popsicle sticks to call on students during a lesson. Write down the students' name or magic number on a popsicle stick, place them in a container, then use them as a way to faciliate asking questions.

Magic Numbers: Assign a number to each student in your class. Use them to manage keeping track of missing homework or in-class assignments.

When you have a few moments to kill and you want to refresh students of classroom routines and procedures, have slips of paper with questions printed on them in a jar. For instance, some of my questions include:
  • What is the procedure when students come in the door in the morning?
  • How are students supposed to check out library books?
  • What are students supposed to do in a fire drill?

When it is time for students to turn in a homework assignment, but you aren't ready to have it piling up up your desk, buy HOMEWORK HAMPERS! I went to Big Lots and bought two 3-drawer systems just big enough to fit their papers. I labeled one for each subject. Then, when students turn in their papers, they close the drawer and all of the papers are nice and neat! I can go and pick them up when I am ready to grade and they are already seaprated by subject! Plus, I use it to talk to them about putting their clothes in the hamper for their parents at home--so the parents love me!!!!

Using Voice Levels within your classroom. For instance the voice level 0 is a silent voice, which is used out in the hall, bathroom, independent work. Voice Level 1 is for using a whisper voice, which is used during small group work, asking a buddy a question, etc. Voice Level 2 is a using a Teacher voice. This is used when teaching in a group, discussion leader, etc. Voice Level 4 is a Recess Voice. They are to use this when out at the playground, etc. All you have to do is tell them the level they should be on or hold up the number for the level they need to be on at that moment. This works really well for the children.

When walking in line to lunch, art, music, etc, teach the kids the "3S's"...Straight, Single file, and Silent.
